Tories to call snap election?

In what seemed a very strange move, Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister, who had been due to appear on the BBC in the run-up to the Scotland v England Six Nations rugby match today, was axed from the programme at short notice.

This was, apparently, something of a surprise to BBC Scotland, the decision having been taken at a UK level, south of the Scottish border.

A spokesman was quoted as saying …

“Given the nature of political debate around Scotland’s future and the proximity of local government elections, it was decided that it would be inappropriate to give undue prominence at the moment to any single political leader in the context of the Scotland-England game.”

This has puzzled and annoyed the Scots’ Twitterverse as the local elections don’t take place until May and campaigning has not begun. Could it be that someone didn’t want our First Minister seen on the BBC south of the border?

And then it struck me.

Currently, in spite of the austerity measures his government is imposing, David Cameron (UK Prime Minister) is riding high in the polls. Labour are giving a very poor showing and the Liberal Democrats (currently in coalition with Cameron’s Tories) are all but wiped out in those same polls.

Would this not be the perfect time for Cameron to call a snap election, getting rid of the LibDems, leaving him free to unleash the full force of a Tory government on the UK?

Perhaps there will be an election sooner than May.
